Strategic planning is a complex process and varies greatly for each organization. There are no ‘golden rules’ that guarantee successful planning, but there are some tips that can help.
• Educate your managers on the strategic planning process. Many don’t understand what strategic planning is, or the purpose of it. Make sure they are familiar with important terms like “mission” and “objective” before you begin. Seethe target languagesectionfor more phrases.
• Allow for open and free discussion regardless of each person’s position within the organization. Strategic planning sessions should be free from judgement—only then can the best ideas be brought to light.
• Keep your plan fluid and adapt it as the marketplace changes.
• Review performance achievement no less than quarterly and as often as monthly or weekly- this will keep your plan alive, and ultimately successful.
