Recursos Humanos Digital Have you ever tried to read “The Economist” and decided to give up because it was too difficult?
Here you have five tips to start understanding this business newspaper.
- Don’t attempt to read it all, just choose one article from your favorite section. For example, Section: Business-Schumpeter- Fixing The Republic. It is always easier to read about topics that you like, or are of special interest to you because of your work or hobbies.
- Take a general glance at the entire article to see if you understand its meaning. Observe the images, headlines, and subtitles. Many times it is not even possible to understand the headlines because you need to know a lot of vocabulary that is why it is important to try to get a general picture.
- Focus only on one or two paragraphs. If you try to understand everything it will wear you out.
- Start a notebook or use your smartphone/tablet to write down the new vocabulary. Look at the new words again later during the day. Do the same every time you read a new paragraph.
- Practice every week and be patient. The Economist is an extremely difficult newspaper to read; even native speakers find it difficult. So the trick is to keep trying.
