RRHH Digital. Formal Communication in the workplace happens in a framework of certain rules and principles and should be predefined by the organizational structure. This type of interaction occurs in a formal and official style between different positions and usually through specific authorized channels laid out by the corporate reporting structure. These can include: corporate meeting, conferences, publications, official memos and performance evaluations.
The formal channels of communication include information that flows upward, downward and horizontally throughout the organizational structure.
Upward: information that goes from subordinates to supervisor or managerial positions and helps superiors see how well employees follow instructions.
Downward: information exchanged between managers and subordinates, normally used to guide and provide information to employees.
Horizontal: information between peers within a department or across departments, it helps coordinate with others to finish tasks, make decisions and share information.
